Fredericksburg Area Commuting
Housing Cost vs. Commuting Distance
Many jobs are located in the District of Columbia and in Virginia and Maryland near the beltway. Because housing costs are generally less the farther one lives from the beltway, many choose to live south in the greater Fredericksburg area. Commuting distance and travel times are important considerations in selecting the location of a home. Many who work in or around D.C. choose to live along the I-95 corridor in the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania and Caroline and in the city of Fredericksburg. Others choose to live farther west of I-95 in the counties of Fauquier, Culpeper and Orange, or east of I-95 in King George County.
Because I-95 is heavily traveled, many choose to travel by way of carpools and vanpools and slug lines. If you haven't experienced I-95 commuting, you can view live video through one of the highway cameras along I-95 to appreciate the traffic.
Virginia Railway Express (VRE) has a strong following. VRE trains leave Monday through Friday from Fredericksburg and stop at the three Stafford stations: Leeland Road, Brooke and Quantico. Two Amtrak trains also service Fredericksburg and Quantico stations. VRE riders can depart and access the Washington Metro at stations in Northern Virginia and Washington DC.
